Single/2 vol max is the tricky thing... at the risk of incurring the Wrath of Max, how about *drumroll* 5cm Per Second?? Single vol, great art, great story. What's not to like?? Most of the other single vol series I own are yaoi >.>

=^.^= +1 for 5cm You might also consider Haruhi Suzumiya but, sticking to vol. 1 & 2.. Iv found haruhi to be a rather stand-alone manga that build up into a massive story ark as you read along (if that makes sence) so it should be possable to read the melancholy ark and be happy as-is. Then if they like it, continue through the volumes. Although someone will point out how wrong I am, and I will happly agree with them Edit: What I mean by "Stand-alone" is basicly, It doesnt matter where you stop, as long as the ark has finished. For example, you could read The Melancholy and Island Syndrome (not in relised order) and then stop reading. I dout you would want to, but it would still make sence. (To the point of I doubt HS acturly has a "ending" or even a true proper way of reading it, exeption of a few tied arks, for example The disaperance mentiones something that happened in Endless 8 (IIRC))

What about Dominion?. They're bigger then most Manga so should be easier to read, quite short so if they didn't like it they wouldn't feel like they wasted too much time and everyone remembers Dominion when the Manga/Anime scene really took off over here. Noodle.

nice recommendations, it's basically for a friend of mine who's sorta into anime but hasnt seen much for years and sorta into comics but only reads them when i borrow him some, i figured manga may be somethign i could get him into instead since his local library and bookshops have tons but he's never sure where to start.

I've been checking out some comedies online and they all seem to end up being quite sexual. Now I'm not looking for that stuff but when I go onto the site I click the arrow for comedy and scroll down the list. I read the description and if the subject takes my fancy then I read it. The problem is that in all the descriptions it doesn't mention anything about the sexual nature of the content. Are there actually good comedies out there that don't resort to sex as a fall back for comedy or am I missing something. Noodle.

I'm actually watching Nichijou at the moment so I don't want to read that. I'll have a look at the other one also I should have mentioned that I'm looking for complete series that may have had a UK release so if they're good then I can buy them. I've already got Haruhi-chan bookmarked for purchase. Noodle.

For sci fi based - the original Ghost in the Shell. Even better (IMHO), if you're willing to go to 4 volumes, Appleseed.

If his local library has even a half-decent manga selection, my rec would be for him to get 4 or 5 random Vol #1s on the shelves and give them a try.

I told him that but he's one of those types who prefers sticking to stuff he get recommended(doesnt like picking up random stuff in case its somethign he regrets reading), i've sent him a bunch of links to short run manga i foudn and a few links to omnibus volumes for stuff he may enjoy alongside sorting him out with a bunch of more recent anime on a usb for him to look at(stuck to stuff there's manga of or will be soon so he can use those as guides)so in theory that should keep him busy till he figures out what he's really into...if all else fails i'll just sort him out with a comixology app for his smartypants phone and he can stick to marvel and such

Rather then posting in the read Manga thread I thought I should use this one as it's actually a recommendation. So I've read Girlfriends and didn't think it was that good but I'm not prepared to write off a whole genre based on a single series. So, what I'm looking for is a Yuri series that I can read online and has been completed. Normally I go for comedy but for the purpose of this inquiry I'm prepared to go solely for story, if it has a little bit of comedy then that's fine but I'm looking for more Yuri then laughs. Noodle.
