Yo, wondering if anyone can give me some advice (and i can use this as a place to vent a bit). You all obviously know about the whole refugee thing thats going on with Syria right now.
I usually try to stay out of conversations about stuff like this but a person who works in my building put up this link about welcoming refugees to our town and how she was against it (and then a load of other people that she knew popped up with some absolutely vile comments). I posted on her status about it saying people should have some compassion and had a conversation with her about it and, even tho we disagree and i think she got some of her facts wrong, i could understand where she was coming from and i think if i knew more about the subject i might be able to help her be a bit more caring about the whole issue. Then a friend of hers started commenting and was basically just very racist against Syrians and muslim people in general. Talked with her for a bit and she just started kinda going around in circles and calling me naive rather than making any non racist arguments for what she believed in.
Anyway, i shared the same petition to welcome refugees on my facebook page then, and both my parents have openly called me stupid and said i was naive about the whole issue (and my dad said "The problem at the moment is that unknown numbers of "imigrants" joined the march across europe with "genuine refugees". As a nation we have got to filter out those in genuine need from the other fuckers. So unfortunately they have to wait in camps until they are screened. Thats just plain and simple common sense. Or we could end up with unknown numbers of armed militant extremists in a land of unarmed pussies. But I am sure your liberal views will be of great comfort to the next family whos child is beheaded in the streets of the uk. RIP Lee Rigby. Lets hope the next one is not in Merthyr."
At that point i just said i wasnt gonna argue with him and wished him happy birthday.
Anyway, how the hell do i respond to people when they say stuff like that? I love my parents more than anything and i know they love me and my family too, but what do i say to that? And when my daughters growing up and asking about these kinds of things what can i say to her to help her understand that just because a psychotic few kill people that doesnt mean their entire religion or nationality are all the same.
Btw, brief background on my beliefs for context. I think that so long as it doesnt harm any other living thing then people should be able to think or believe whatever the hell they want, even the extremist people so long as they dont actually harm anyone. As soon as we start decreeing this belief or that religion is terrible then were entering a 1984 style world, which would obviously be bad. I personally think all forms of organised religions (christian, catholic, muslim, etc) are bad but the simple individual belief in something is something that can be positive (no belief in anything like god myself but if that kind of stuff helps you get through hard times in your life then power to you).
Anyway, if you actually read all this i am very impressed lol. Even if no one replies i feel slightly better that i got to write all this down somewhere.
