oh-totoro.com/post/93700803450/studio-ghibli-announces-closure-toshio-suzukiCan't say I'm massively bothered - alwaya regarded much of Ghibli's production as over-hyped overly-fantastical froth, often with a mightly moral hammer to make sure everyone gets the underlying message. Heretic that I am The standout Ghibli's for me are Grave of the Fireflies, Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises and Only Yesterday (ie, the more Slice of Life drama films)

While Studio Giblets was never really a favourite of mine I'm sure that many will miss it and see it's passing and see it as the end of era. Unless it's all a load of bunkum for some free advertising or to shift their back catalogue.

That bloody Tumblr post, it's been the source of every article online about this, except that It's wrong. They've lost money on the last couple of films (the ones that haven't had international releases yet, hurry up with Takahata's film StudioCanal!) so it looks like they won't go into a new production with restructuring possibly happening. That said, they probably wouldn't be in this mess if Miyazaki didn't use it as his own pet animation studio and they attempted to find a new generation of talent that didn't just mimic his style. Apparently this is the reason why Mamoru Hosoda left, he tried doing something different from Miyazaki's style for Howl's Moving Castle and got crapped on by the studio so left. So it looks like the only person that can get away with doing something at Ghibli that isn't like Miyazaki is Takahata and that's only because he co-founded the studio (not that you'd think it the way people think: Ghibli = Miyazaki, H.) Can't say I'm massively bothered - alwaya regarded much of Ghibli's production as over-hyped overly-fantastical froth, often with a mightly moral hammer to make sure everyone gets the underlying message. Heretic that I am The standout Ghibli's for me are Grave of the Fireflies, Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises and Only Yesterday (ie, the more Slice of Life drama films) Agreed. Outside of Takahata's output and a handful of others, I'm not fussed. I've been a lot more interested with what Studio 4°c and Madhouse have pumped out from the period when the vastly over-hyped Spirited Away came out to the present day.

I'm not a big fan of the franchise but I would miss it if it was gone. It is all the newer films I enjoy more with the old ones I like (that I've seen so far) being Princess Mononoke and My Neighbour Totoro. I love everything from Spirited Away onwards, they're delightful. From Up On Poppy Hill is still the last I've seen until I can get my hand on The Wind Rises and it's beautiful. I felt really good watching the entire thing.
