Well, I'm intrested in finding a Comic series to read. Currently edging towards a Marvel series but I look at the list of whats available and my instant thought is: "oh C*** how many" So. Where do I begin? It doesn't have to be Marvel, infact there the only Major lot of comics I know exist. The reccomendation MUST be available to buy from edition 1 and be preferably "Stand Alone" rather than a continuation series, I dont want to be jumping in and thinking "who are you" lol. Bear in mind, upto now, I havent watched/read/researched anything even related to Marvel or any of there charactors. I know of spider man but I havn't even watched the films let alone read the comic's

And when you say 'available from issue one', does that include the collected issues (trade paperback) version?? The tpbs often work out cheaper than buying the individual issues anyways. Off the top of my head, the series which have hooked me most in recent times have been: Joe the Barbarian The Walking Dead (long, but widely available) No Hero (a sort of anti-superhero comic) Saga Mind the Gap Twenty-Nine Morning Glories Plus (of course) anything Tank Girl As I have most of the above as tpbs, the individual weekly issues are all just sitting around in boxes, so if you want a look, just shout. (Alternately, I could put together a 'sampler' pack of the first couple issues from a variety of series) which I'd happily post to you, alternately we were planning to visit Oxford at some point soon.

TFTR Duo. Nope, Doesn't have to be (Infact preferably not) a Superhero series. But if it looks good then I wouldnt mind. I'm going to take a guess at TPBS being the comic equivalent of a omnibus edition manga. If so, then also prefered, and I didnt relise they (re)relised in this format tbh Once I get back from work il give the above a quick research into

I'm going to take a guess at TPBS being the comic equivalent of a omnibus edition manga. If so, then also prefered, and I didnt relise they (re)relised in this format tbh Once I get back from work il give the above a quick research into Yeah, the tpb is the 'graphic novel' collection of the individual weekly comic issues. Just like most 'manga' (tankōbon) we get over here are actually weekly/monthly chapters for that comic collected into one vol (and usually with higher quality printing and paper. Most tankōbon have between 5 and 10 chapters. The Japanese weekly/monthly comic (Weekly Shonen Jump, etc) tend to be almost phone-book-sized anthologies containing a chapter each from many stories and generally regarded as being disposable once read. A western tpb will usually contain between 4 and 8 weekly issues-worth of content, less all the ads and other gumpf you usually get in the weeklies. A long comic series will have multiple tpbs (e.g. Walking Dead vol 18 has just come out) while others may contain the entire run in 1 tpb. Weeklies are usually in the £2.20-£2.80 range at the moment, while tpbs run from £7 to about £10 on average. So a 6-issue weekly series would cost about £13 but the tpb would be maybe £7 or 8. And, while the weekly issues rarely get reprinted, so stocks do quite quickly disappear, the tpbs tend to stick around for longer, so are easier to find. As I think I've mentioned previously, I buy the weeklies for the series I like so I can read them right away... but then also buy the tpb for easier storage/rereading. I really should sort and dispose of my weeklies at some point! There's always 2000AD (of course) if you want to see a range of different (albeit all sci-fi-ish) stories, £2.35 per week at your local newsagent. I've been reading it since issue 1 came out 36 years ago. *feels oooolllldd* And I've just (this very lunchtime) found a similar new monthly UK anthology: Strip, with the tag line @the Monthly Adventure Comics Magazine) which contains 6 major stories (sci-fi, adventure, action), plus a couple of single-page gag strips, plus a couple of features/interviews/etc. Looks pretty good. Again, should be available in a good newsagent with a cover price of £3.50. Where to buy... a couple that I know of in your neck of the woods are: Lazy Gamer (Headington) Korky Paul (Summertown) Reading no longer has any specialist comic shops, though if you can get to London, you'll be spoilt for choice with Orbital, Forbidden Plant, Gosh, Mega-City... HTH

Well if it ever gets finished America's Got Powers has been an interesting read. It was to be a 6 issue mini series that started last year. They have only release 5 of the issues and then gave it a 7th issue. For the last few months the 6th issue has been pushed back and back. It was due out again tomorrow but once again its been pushed back and I'm sure closer to the next release date it will be pushed back again ^_^;; (In fact I just checked and in fact it has been pushed back another week) The series Supercrooks was pretty good: Bunch of Super villains leaving the USA because there are too many Super Heroes there to do a job so they go abroad to pull off a big job. Its a pretty good read and not very long as it was only 4 issues long. The book version is on amazon for a reasonable price. Kick-Ass 1 and 2 are also ok, not really a fan of the Hit-Girl mini series that takes place between the two but its worth a read once. The first Kick-Ass book is very different in places compared to the movie which is pretty standard for Comic book movies but they are really big ones once you read the book and then see the film. Also pretty graphic and really f**ked up too. Superior is another Mark Millar that I think is pretty good. Its about a boy called Simon who is suffering from MS who is turned into the comic book character Superior (aka Superman) by a space monkey. He has a week before the monkey will return to explain it all so Simon as Superior uses his new powers to do some good.

I'd say if you want to avoid superhero's then probably avoid marvel and DC altogether as pretty much everything they do is capes and cowls, though if you can find it Warren ellis collected edition of Nextwave is worth the price just for the pure pee take of some of the more wacky/weird marvel stuff(also has lots of violence and swears) Bedlam is a good one for a series about a jker type villain who now works for the good guys despite them not really wanting his help. supercrooks looks fun so i may grab that myself also The boys is a good series about a group who hunt superpoered people.

I've read pretty much everything non-spandex he's released (and a few of his spandex-fests), right back to the cyberpunk classic Lazarus Churchyard in the early 1990s. Notable series in addition to LC have been (imho) Transmetropolitan, FreakAngels, Ignition City, Ministry of Space and RED, plus one-shots like SVK, Crecy and AEtheric Mechanics. I really like his alternative history/alt-reality/post-apocalyptic slant on things. I also got a "What the fu...." from him at an Expo signing session a few years back... I was cosplaying Soubi at the time XD. Yup, I'm really enjoying Bedlam... nice dark character and story, great artwork.

Apparently he's currently working on a script treatment for a freak angels movie(or so i read on his site a few weeks back) so hopefully that actually happens unlike global frequency which yet again seems to have died a death(that story has the worse luck when it comes to adaptations)
