Browsing the shelves of Orbital and Forbidden Planet with MIBU earlier today, the subject of comic recs came up.
So... here's some of mine
2000AD-based
Button Man - 4 volumes, collecting the 4 series. Harry is a 'button man', a hired killer. He is coerced into entering a tournament which pits button men against one another for the 'sport' and betting opportunities of their masters. Brilliant story, tense action, awesome artwork. And, not being sci-fi/fantasy/superhero, a real oddity for 2000AD to run.
Chopper - Song of the Surfer. Now, I've never really got into Judge Dredd, only read the occasional story arc. But this spin off was great - story, artwork, characters... it ticked all the right boxes for me. Was available as a stand-alone tpb, but now incorporated into a larger vol containing all the Chopper stories.
Durham Red - Strontium Dog spin-off. The Mark Harrison-drawn series are my particular faves, seriously great artwork.
Sláine - barbarian fantasy, inspired by Celtic mythology. The Horned God story arc, with Simon Bisley's stunning art is well worth checking out
Others
Freakangels - Warren Ellis-penned tale of mutants in post-apocalyptic east London. Paul Duffield's art is different, but works well.
The Light and Darkness War - Kennedy and Veitch teamed up back in 1991 to produce this 6-issue series abot a crippled Vietnam vet being drawn into an AU war. Recently (and finally!) re-released as a hardback collection.
Joe the Barbarian - more AU stuff, with a 12 year old diabetic boy falling into a alternate reality where his toys battle Death.
Maus - the Holocaust, cleverly retold with mice and cats representing the Jews and Nazis respectively. Doesn't pull it's punches, harrowing at times, but such an important comic.
Troubled Souls - a dark and gritty story, set against the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
I'll return to add some more soon.
