Use by dates, yes. Best before end, no.

Depends what it is. Fresh fruit/veg and eggs you can ignore any dates and tell by looking/testing.

I'm not bothered with best before dates but I'll stick to use by dates for most things bar sauces (mayo, ketchup etc), milk (stop when it smells bad haha), cheese (bin when mouldy) & fruits and veg (bin when minging/mouldy) haha.

I've found noodles have been fine 2 years after its BBE date. I didn't use the sachet though.
Really it depends on what it is. tinned meats, I keep to them. most stuff its a case of smell it and see.

I've actually had the opposite problem and thrown out a good half dozen packs as they smelt/tasted of the plastic wrapper.

I go by what it looks/smells like but if in doubt I chuck it away.
Milk easily goes past its use by if you get it in the plastic bottles with a lid, eggs I'm more careful with. The main problem I have is bread growing blue mould when it's warm and damp in the summer so I buy rolls and freeze them.

With the exception of meat, I look and smell. I have to mention to more people than I should do that Best Before means just that, it's best before that time but still edible afterward. I just had an argument with my Mum about this, she wanted honey and it said on the jar it expired 2012 so didn't want any. The answer stayed the same when I told her honey never goes off. eggs I'm more careful with. Eggs are quite easy to tell if they've gone off or not even before you crack it open. Put the egg in a glass or jug of cold water, if it's horizontal, it's fresh, if it's at an angle, a week old, if it's vertical, it's older, be careful. I've found that two weeks is the upper limit to eggs, after that they start becoming iffy.

Eggs float when they're off.

When they're off completely, yes. There's an air bubble in an egg and it's smaller when it's fresh and bigger when it's older.
