Poll Time....
Do you like Studio or Live albums? and Why?
I love Live albums, especially if there is a dvd/br of the concert... The imperfections are beautiful and add soul to the music (imho)
Ofcourse, if the band is pretty meh live, then I wouldn't bother.. but in general, I love Live albums

Need an option for both.
I find some artists sound better live and I also do miss the MTV Unplugged series - got Shakira Unplugged - really showed just how good she was back then before she part reinvented herself (Emilio Estevan behind that) for the US market.
Having said that there are some live albums out there that should not be.

It really does depend on the artist(s).
A lot of albums tend to sound better from the studio as they have more time to refine how it sounds. When you're live you have to be a good musician(s) and/or put energy into it for it to work out well which is why the amount of really good live albums tends to be a small list compared to the amount of good studio albums, I could name a fair few but it's dwarfed by studio albums.
There are a couple of grey areas with studio/live albums. There are quite a number that have been overdubbed in the studio after the recording, one example being Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous where people suggest 75% of it was actually done in the studio.
But then you have studio recordings from artists before the mid/late 60's where, because of the lack of multi-track recorders (with some exceptions such as Les Paul), it had to be played live with no/minimal overdubs which is why I love listening to a lot of jazz recordings from this period as they have the best of both worlds for the most part.
So for me, when done right (not often), live albums, but studio albums tend to be more consistent and easier to listen to.

Studio. I think live albums lose something in translation. Also, hate having loads of screaming over my favourite songs

Depends on a number of factors... the band, the venue, the era and, most importantly, was *I* there?? I do have a number of cracking live albums Queen at Wembley, Marillion's Recital of the Script, NMA's ...And Nobody Else, which all fit my critera for damn great lives.

Bryan Adams unplugged. Swoon. Nirvana unplugged. Swoon. Nine Inch Nails' Still Album. Swoon.
If they're officially released live albums me likey. If they're not, they sound sh*t. I like live DVDs although quite clearly they do have something done to em to make em not so live. Marilyn Mansons Guns Gods and Governments being a good example.
I do like my studio releases though. Like if they're poop live, I won't let that ruin enjoying a studio cd for me.
Lana Del Rey is perfection. I actually saw her live a year ago maybe and her confidence now makes her perform better. I saw QOTSA last year and well it's the MEN Arena isn't it, they make everyone sound poop lol.
PSY sounds crap live. I love his songs either way. Aural Vampire sound great studio wise, live though, I have no idea.

Oh... somewhere I do have a whole boxful of *cassette* bootlegs of gigs, NMA, assorted goth bands, metal bands, prog bands... all dating from the 1980s. Some I did myself, some from friends and some bought from the guy who used to trade in them at Chelmsford market.
Some very good (on a par with official lives), most average and a few unlistenable.

Bootlegs are hit and miss. There's been a good couple of audio's but they've been pulled from like live shows on radios if that makes sense?
Now I've seen some really good bootleg dvds of shows and the audio on that is brilliant! Just no audio only has ever translated like that. For the ones I've heard anyway.
I'm so out of touch with music. It's quite upsetting since it used to be a big thing for me.
