Hey guys! So recently, I have been wanting to learn Japanese. Thing is my school doesn't teach it and I can't afford lessons. So I was wondering, if any of you either could teach it me or give me some advice on how to learn it?
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, didn't really know where it should go.

Try your local library for language books and CDs - while there might be a charge to borrow the CDs, it'll be a lot less than Rosetta Stone or similar courses. There are also some basic intros on youtube and elsewhere around the 'net - google is your friend! And start watching subbed anime, rather than dubbed!

Hey johan. Do you have any prefrances with how you would like to study and what do you have easy access to? Books/internet/by person Best bet would be to learn the hiragana and Katakana alphabet's. these are pritty easy to learn, but you must remember them by sight and try and use as little Romaji as possable, easiest way to do this is flash cards and a friend. These are the fundamentals of the japanese language so you really don't want be be getting into bad habbits I dont know if they are good, but NHK has online japanese lessons, think il give a few a listen later. www3.nhk.or.jp/lesson/english/index.htmlDoes japanese Charactors work on here? (Following is hiragana) あ Ah (like fAther) い EE (like fEEt) うOo (like fOOd えA (like hAte) お O (like nO)

dont forget kanji afterall japanese has 3 written languages and kanji tends to be the one none nihonjin(japanese natives) see most(its essentially borrowed words and such, but yeah check your local library and that NHK site for a few starters and as duo said start watching anime subbed as you'll be surprised how easily it helps things sink in

I found the Michel Thomas CDs useful for learning the listening and speaking parts of the language as it drip feeds you words and how to say them, then putting them into a sentence with the correct sentence structure. It can get a bit overwhelming if you try doing lots of lessons in one go but they keep them short and as separate tracks so you can easily go back. Don't know about the written part of the language, while the spoken is fairly easy, the written part (the Kanji anyway, the Chinese characters) is hard. dont forget kanji afterall japanese has 3 written languages They actually use four written languages, Katakana (the simple angular one), Hirigana (the rounded off one), Kanji (Chinese characters) and Romaji (Roman letters, i.e. what you're reading now). [/pedantic arse mode]

yeah but in our case you only need to learn 3 since most of us should be fine with romanji

Hey Johan. I actually taught some basic japanese on a forum I was on some time ago. If I still have the resource packs knocking about on my drives, I'll load them onto a file share for you if you like There's also a couple of games you can use to practice your kana recognition; a game called Knuckles in Chinaland and another one called Slime Forest Adventure both of which are free online. There's a DS game called My Japanese Coach which is great too:) If you don't have a lot of time to practice, try a book called Japanese in 10 Minutes a Day by Kershul Japanese for busy people is another good book series, designed by the Association for Japanese-language Teaching
