Made a start on The Dark Tourist by Dom Joly. I had already read this book a while back and really enjoyed it. While I may not have enjoyed Trigger Happy TV as most people did, I found his travel documentaries to be very good indeed. Noodle.

Almost finished Divergent by Veronica Roth (1st in a trilogy). Unputdownable.
Almost as good as The Hunger Games with a similar dystopian future, female protagonist, love interest, physical and mental trials... but well written, decent setting and plot. Insurgent (book 2) is on it's way.

While waiting for Insurgent, I'm reading another dystopian YA book, 'Gone' by Michael Grant.
Comes across as a combination of Lost and Heroes... everyone 15 or over suddenly disappears from a small US town, leaving the kids trying to survive, with some developing various forms of 'superpowers'.
'tis an ejoyable read, nothing particularly groundbreaking. Whether I'll last the full, 6-book series remains to be seen.

Six Weeks by John Lewis-Stempel
Fascinating and sobering book about subalterns (2nd Lieutenants and other junior officers) of the British Army on the Western Front during WW1.
The title refers to their average life expectancy...

It somehow hooked me in toward the end of book 1...

So yeah... I finished Micheal Grant's 'Gone' series last week, with Light being the final (sixth) volume. Pretty good overall, though occasionally difficult to keep track of all the many characters as they weaved in and out of the story.
More post-apocalyptic sci-fi YA followed, with the excellent Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith. A truly bonkers book, thoroughly enjoyable, though the concept, writing and frenetic pacing might not appeal to all. But try it anyways!

Just finished Shards of Time, the 7th (and final) book of Lynn Flewelling's excellent 'Nightrunner' fantasy series. While this came across as simply another good Nightrunner story, there was a tinge of sadness at the knowledge that it was the last and no more will I be able to read about the further adventures of Seregil and Alec. Although, being 'just' another good Nightrunner story, she didn't kill off any important characters or tie up things in such a way that a return would be impossible, so (as the auther herself says) 'never say never'.

Relived my youth by reading 'The Machine Gunners' and 'Fathom Five', both by Robert Westall. 2 YA books set in the North East during WW2. Was good to re-read these after some 30+ years. Now trying to track down the BBC's 1983 TV adaptation of The Machine Gunners. "Where you going now??" (possibly only Random and Dappr might get that reference... )

Recently finished 1Q84 book 2 by Haruki Murakami.
Book 1 was A LOT of setting up. Sometimes it became quite the random sprawl, but book 2 begins stitching things together, and it does this very well indeed.
A recommended read, but do prepare for lots of setting things up for hundreds of pages in advance.
Onto book 3.

C'mon, chaps, why you not read, eh?
I read Spice and Wolf volume 7 recently (Side ColoUrs). This volume introduces side stories that are tucked somewhere in the past stories, two of which were the extra episodes featured in the anime. Was okay, but we really want the proper story's continuation.
Now onto 1Q84: Book 3.
I think this is Murakamis most divisive work. I fall into the camp of enjoying it. Everything eventually falls into place, and I'm liking Aomame's plight. Overall the series finishes at 12000 odd pages; it's a long one, but unique.
