Indulging in some old-style folkrock with The Levellers is this performance really from 20 years ago and The Men They Couldn't Hang with something fitting for this year. Both groups come out of the protest music tradition under the Thatcher Government in the 1980s/90s. Given the current political landscape maybe they need to dust off their instruments. Bit of politics

I first saw the Levs back end of 1990 when they supported a New Model Army tour and then followed them pretty soldily for about 5 or 6 years and saw them maybe 50 times. Lots of cracking songs on the first couple of albums - Liberty, What You Know, Beanfield, Far From Home which still resonate with me today and still feature heavily on my mp3 player Went right off them after 'Mouth to Mouth' and the bleedin' awful albums ('Hello Pig' being truly, truly bad) that followed. But we have seen see them at least once a year since 2004 at their Beautiful Days festival down near Exeter and, tbh, they usually play a decently bouncy greatest hits set. And the last couple of albums ('Letters from the Underground' and 'Static on the Airwaves') have been a welcome return to form with a sound close to their early stuff. LIBERTY!!!! *starts doing a spinning pogo around the office* And Green Fields of France is a great song, plenty of bands and artists have covered Eric Bogle's original - the Dropkick Murphy's version is good, but my fave is by ex-Blyth Power guitarist Wob, who did a superb stripped back acoustic version on his first (cassette) release... really must digitise that! Another WW1-related song worth a listen is 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda' - another Eric Bogle-penned song covered by many bands, most notably by the Pogues:

I saw the Pogues live many years ago in Liverpool just when Shane was starting to lose it. He only sang approx. 1/4 of the songs, the others covered, and he spent the entire concert with a lit cigarette in one hand and a bottle in the other. One of the best concerts I've been to This isn't a war song, I don't think, but to be honest I have no clue what it's about but it's one of their best with a frankly disturbing video:

To mark the return, ok rename, of someone Oh god.... During the late-80s and early-90s, I alternated my post-goth/crusty phase with the occasional glam revival 'do' - Sweet, Mud, Bay City Rollers, Shawaddywaddy, Rubettes... they all appeared at glam rock weekenders at various out-of-season holiday camps dotted around the country or on various combo-billed gigs. >.>
