I'd like to start by saying that there is a very big, very glaring misconception out in the big wide world, that people who get together and pretend to be elves, dwarfs and orcs have no social lives. They are social lepers, to be cast out from society and that pen and paper role-play is solely the realm of high school outcasts and the like.
Well, Stop drinking the Kool-Aid boys and girls; Because that rather simple assumption is an utter fantasy, Lies and utter slander, all of it. It's just one big joke that media such as movies and TV enjoy using as a trope or a stereotype on a semi-regular basis. This, is anything but what roleplay is actually like, both to watch and to participate in as either a player or a games-master.

"Enough Serious talk! Lets get onto some lighter topics of conversation shall we!"
Hello Folks, My name here on the Neo Zeta boards is [ Slow ] and like many of you, I'm a fan of Movies, Console Games, Anime and TV.
So far you have a 'Play by post' Role-play sub forum here at Neo-Zeta but what I'd to do here is open up a general discussion about Table-Top Role-play games in general, both Digital and Pen & Paper.
The Point of which is hopefully to share our collective knowledge on the subject, spark some interesting debate and maybe even to give some folks who've always been interested in Role-play but have lacked a local group, knowledge on the subject or perhaps even the courage to simply ask to join a group; a place where they can turn to for helpful, useful information.
So I'd like to start by asking a few questions to you all:

So I'd like to start by asking a few questions to you all:
- Who are you in your gaming group? A Dungeon Master, a player? which do you prefer?
- What do you play, and why do you play it? Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition, FATE 1.0, GURPS, Maid RP, Arkham Horror, Shadowrun?
- What would you like to play to be playing and why would like to play it?
- Where do you play your Roleplay sessions? In person? or Online?
For those folks out there who don't role-play but are interested, either as just a general interest or because you want actually want to role-play yourself, then feel free to ask anything!
I for one would be happy to help and share my experiences, both good and bad, if asked to.

To set the ball in motion proper, I'll start by answering my own questions.
within the Groups I play in, I'm usually the GM. When me and my first group picked up our first role-playing game, about seven years ago now, I elected to be the GM and its a role I have pretty much exclusively been tied to ever since. That being said however, more recently I've been playing as much as, or even more than I GM. I am currently a member of two groups as GM, which I GM over the Internet and am a member of an additional three groups as a player, two of which meet up in person and the other is a digital group.
I honestly don't have any preference either way, I do get a serious kick out of GM'ing and constructing campaigns but I also really enjoying being told or discovering a narrative as a player as well.
Currently, I GM Fantasy Flight Games 'Deathwatch'. A Warhammer 40,000 universe set 'Grim-Dark' RPG that has you take on the role of the larger than life Space Marines and go punch pretty much everything until it stops moving. If I could sum it up in a sentence: "Ultra violence comes as standard, the plot is optional". I do my best to tell a compelling narrative for each group and shy away from punching or shooting things where possible; but seeing as they're playing as space marines, they are more than aware that they can just solve most problems by shooting or punching something... or so they think!
I'm currently playing in a few groups, however all of them are all currently based in forty first millennium and warhammers 'grim-Dark' setting. I am in two Dark Heresy Groups; Dark Heresy is a Arkham horror styled investigative cult Sci-Fi horror where you play a bunch of mere mortals and more often than not have to take on mortal cults and the like... however... sometimes 'other' forces get involved, such as Daemons... things get pretty bad when a daemon appears.
Dark heresy is always a lot of fun and tends to be a fast based investigation focused game that tends to try and shy away from random dungeon crawls or shooting matches.
The other group I'm in as a player is normally a Deatwhatch group, and is my longest running player group as a member. We've been on a rolling story campaign for a little over two years now and the group is still having a blast despite some players going and new ones coming and in and then they themselves also leaving! I have somehow also managed to have only a single character throughout the entire affair, something I feel is nothing short of a miracle considering some of the outrageous things he's done in his short lifetime; 'People Nun-chucks' for one thing. However, the long standing GM has finally had a case of writers block and were currently starting another 40k themed RPG called 'Only War'.
I play, or have played, a rather large number of warhammer forty thousand based Pen and Papers RPG's over the years on various platforms and now... Its time for something different.
Right now I'm in the early stages of putting together a new group, with myself as GM and I'm busy going through systems that'll fit my setting. Iron Kingdoms was one system that caught my eye, with its diesel punk 'heavy metal' themes and tones. Magic and black powder technology? yes, yes please. It's something I'd like to play as a player however and right now I'm going through other systems, such as the Japanese only Sword World 2.0 and the Kickstartered OVA 2.0 as alternatives for me to use as a GM. Once again though, these are systems I'd really like to play in myself, as a player, not a GM. I'll need to make mind up sooner or later however!
Currentley, all of my GM sessions are done online, thanks to the wonders of Google+ and Roll20.
Google+'s party feature is a fantastic bit of kit and is completely compatible with the virtual tabletop, Roll20. Roll20 is a virtual tabletop put together by a bunch of guys, including the entire 'Tabletop Forge' team that did so well in their kcikstarter a year or two back and provide people a virtual space to play their traditionally pen and paper tabletop role-play games in.
Here's a link to their site for those interested in learning a bit more, or maybe even having a play around with it themselves!

Whelp, there's the start, now its up to you folks!
